Thanks for Thumbnail Zoom Plus. Thumbnail Zoom Plus appears in the Firefox “Add-on Bar”, which is great. I can got to “preferences” very easily.

Suggestion: How about an “ON/OFF” option? It get quite annoying sometimes. Thanks.

Sorry for my STUPID suggestion… I accidently clicked on the icon instead of the “down arrow”. Doing so DOES turn it Off/On. Thanks for the software.

No problem… it’s a good suggestion, which just happens to be in Thumbnail Zoom Plus already.

Excellent add-on David. However, both versions 2.4.5beta1 and 2.5 are incompatible with Firefox Nightly v26.0a1 (2013-09-01), causing a crash.

Please add a ‘exclusion list’ so that users can exclude specific sites which are not in the options list.

For eg, i don’t want zoomed images at, but it is not in the list so can’t exclude it. & i will not simply disable others in the list cause it will disable all other websites not on the list including 500px.

We are in the need of options or settings, if you prefer, for TZP like exclusion list, save full size image in custom location, etc…

Can you implement these. It will be most helpful..

    Webm support please.

    • April 9, 2014 at 9:19 am

That sounds like a good idea; I’ll investigate. I could see it working in scenarios where webm is used as a gif replacement. I don’t know though if you’d be able to use the movie player’s controls since moving or clicking might end the pop-up.

Is the example site you have in mind, or something else?

Add a context menu option that “view full size image in new tab” like “save full size image as”.

this works really well, but lately, it has not been working on some facebook thumbnails. every time i hover over a thumbnail, i get a “broken image icon”, and the image does not zoom.

Hi David…great add-on…I adjust the time to enlarge a pic only after 3 seconds while the mouse hovers over the pic….however, the options menu refuses to save the new settings and reverts back to the old settings…which in this case is 0.5 seconds….Is Firefox the culprit?….Does Firefox refuse to remember the new settings?….This refusal to save new settings with other add-ons also takes place and so this is why I ask if Firefox itself is responsible….

    Thank you kindly David…

    September 17, 2014 at 5:30 pm

This may have been addressed, but I cannot find a fix.

I use two monitors and every time I hover over something, it pops up on the other monitor. What should I change?

    • September 17, 2014 at 11:48 pm

I’m not sure; I haven’t tested much on multiple monitors. It might help to go to Thumbnail Zoom Plus Preferences and set “Max size” to either Window or Web Page. The other setting (Screen) allows it to put the pop-up anywhere on the screen (either screen, apparently).

What operating system are you using?

    December 5, 2014 at 9:40 am

Just last night, it started zooming in on some pictures it previously hadn’t, inlcuding XKCD comics. It’s not necessary (it’s not making them bigger — just showing them again, the same size), and the image is now interfering with the XKCD hover-text. I tried adding XKCD to “Disabled Sites” and restarting Firefox, but that did nothing.

    • December 8, 2014 at 12:13 am

Jen, it’s probably zooming those because your Default Zoom in TZP preferences is greater than 100%. EG if it’s 144%, it’d expect the pop-up to be 144% larger than the original too.

In any case, you should be able to prevent it with Disabled Sites. If that’s not working, it’s probably one of two reasons:
      1. Note that after adding something to Disabled Sites, it doesn’t take effect until you reload the page (Control+R / Command+R) or restart Firefox.
      2. You must end the Disabled Site rule with “*” so that it applies to all pages of the site (eg*). Omitting the “*” would exclude only the site’s main page. Using the “Add” button in TZP preferneces while viewing the site should add the proper rule.

      Does this help?

Started having problems with Pinterest over the last few days, 99% of the images on the main Pinterest page are no longer zooming. The odd 1 or 2 do display zoomed though. Prior to this I was having no issues with TZP and Pinterest. Although, If I click on an image on the home page and go the image’s own webpage, there are side panels on the right that display thumbnails of the other images in board, hovering other these thumbnails, does make TZP display the zoomed image. So on Pinterest, TZP does not seem to work on the larger images, but only the thumbnail sized images.

I’ve no problems with other sites, just Pinterest all of a sudden.

    Is anyone else experiencing this?

See the image, i have tzp disabled but the icon has no red cross over it. I have to enable the tzp and then disable it again to get the red cross that resembles disabled tzp.

After a restart, the red cross is gone again but the tzp is disabled. It is very confusing. Please fix this if it can be fixed.

    I am using tzp 3.2 & FF 34 on windows 7 ultimate 64-bit.

    • January 7, 2015 at 10:55 pm

Prateek, thanks for the problem report; that’s a new one to me. It looks like when the TZP tool button is in the “three-lines” menu, and you have multiple windows open, some windows don’t update their icon. I think this is a Firefox bug rather than a TZP bug, but I’ll look for a workaround.

It does seem to work properly if you drag the TZP button out of the three-lines menu, into the always-visible toolbar (when in Customize mode).

        January 8, 2015 at 5:30 am

If you can fix it, it will be great. I reported it to firefox too, lets see if they acknowledge it.

    January 16, 2015 at 2:23 pm

Great add-on! However I have a random issue with it not working in FF Private mode. It will work for 10-30 mins (on reddit but seems the same for other sites) then just start to display grey boxes instead of the image. If I open the same page in normal mode it works fine. If I re-start FF it works oK for another random amount of time!
    Mint 17.1

    • February 8, 2015 at 10:55 pm

I haven’t heard of that before, but there are some issues on some versions on Linux. It’s interesting that it only happens in Private Browsing mode; I can’t think why that would be. I can see that makes restarting firefox an annoying workaround since it won’t restore the private browsing window. Another thing you could try is dragging tab(s) out of the problematic Private Browsing window onto the desktop or into another Private Browsing window, and see if that helps.

The next time the problem happens, could you look in Tools > Web Developer > Browser Console, and see if there are error messages from TZP? If so, mail them to me at . Note that the log may include URLs, which you can scrub if you want.

      • ezer otven
        April 17, 2015 at 10:11 am

I see those gray boxes all the time in normal mode too. Once they appear, I have to restart FF to fix it. I have looked at the Browser Console, but nothing is printed when I hover over an image to activate TZP. What else to look at?

      • April 18, 2015 at 4:50 pm

ezerotven, are you on Linux too? I’m not sure what else to look for; I use TZP with firefox on mac and linux and don’t see that problem, though it may be a different flavor of Linux. If you’re using https-everywhere, try disabling that; there are incompatibilities.

  27. February 3, 2015 at 10:09 am

just reporting that the image search pop-ups are not working on the main level (using 3.3beta2). if you click on an image so it opens up below in a larger view, then hover on it, it works.

Hi great addon. Have you thought about adding an option to use https where available (e.g. imgur)? Even when using https everywhere it still gives the http address in history when viewed with Thumnail Zoom Plus. It would be nice to have the option to use https.

  30. ezer otven
    April 18, 2015 at 11:52 pm

      June 4, 2015 at 1:18 pm

update: the grey box is much more difficult to reproduce now with firefox 38. But eventually it appears. However it seems if I open a new firefox window (without restarting FF), the gray boxes do not appear there, and TZP works fine in that window. This is a good enough workaround for me.

    May 26, 2015 at 10:59 am

Any idea why the app would suddenly stop working on Firefox 38.0.1? I mainly use it while browsing reddit and Twitter. The zoom feature stopped working suddenly. I deleted the extension and reinstalled it and also tried changing the preferences. I haven’t made any system changes recently.

    • May 27, 2015 at 11:23 pm

It should work with ff 38. In Thumbnail Zoom Plus preferences make sure “Enable” is on and “Key to” is set to “not display”.

  32. Jake
    May 28, 2015 at 12:54 pm

Thaks, I checked those settings and I’m getting the same results. The strange thing is that I noticed its working on IMDB but not imgur or twitter. I’ll keep trying.

    • May 28, 2015 at 9:52 pm

If it’s only working on certain sites, check the settings in the “Site Checkboxes” tab of TZP preferences. For reddit and twitter the most important ones are “Others”, “Others (Indirect)”, “Imgur”, “Twitter”, and “Twitpic”. Or try turning them all on.

Also make sure the site isn’t disabled in the “Disabled Sites” tab.

  34. Ben
    July 27, 2015 at 10:26 am

Facebook seems to have mostly quit working. From a list of friends, I can hover over them to see their cover photo, but I used to be able to then hover over the profile picture on the resulting popup to see it larger. Also, I thought I could go to a photo album and mouse over the photos to see them expanded, but that doesn’t work anymore. (Pale Moon 25.6.0)

    • September 3, 2015 at 11:29 pm

Help me understand the reason. Do you mean you don’t want to see still thumbs of e.g. videos? Or you don’t want to see pop-ups which themselves are playing videos, of e.g. webm’s and gif’s?

    • September 3, 2015 at 11:33 pm

I haven’t seen that problem before. Do both pop-ups look identical — same size, same look to their borders, etc.? I’m wondering if you have another image pop-up add-on installed in addition to Thumbnail Zoom Plus.

      • Folder
        September 12, 2015 at 6:57 pm

Sorry about the late reply, but the pictures were exactly the same. One was just smaller and overlapped the bigger one. I don’t have another pop-up addon installed.

  38. September 9, 2015 at 8:32 pm

I use the ‘s’ hotkey often to “Save Full-size Image As” but the enlarged pop-up blocks the save-as prompt. In this case i’m unable to select a location to save the file or click any buttons. After hitting the ‘s’ key can you change the behavior so the pop-up window closes?

  39. September 20, 2015 at 4:49 pm

For pinning images for Pinterest from external sites via Firefox add-ons (i.e. Pinterest Pin Button or Share Button for Pinterest), I’m able to disable TZP by adding “*” to the disabled sites list so i don’t get the image expanding on top of the text i’m trying to enter for the pin. But I don’t know how to do this for the pop-ups when using the Pin buttons on for any images, b/c I can’t find a link displayed anywhere. Do you know where this is displayed or what to add to the disabled list?

    • November 18, 2015 at 9:15 am

TZP used to work on but i’m not getting the pop-ups anymore. Not sure if it was when i updated Firefox to 42.0 or if there was was a change on their website.

  41. Alfonso
    April 16, 2016 at 11:31 am

Is there a way to increase the TZP default max filename length? Maybe in about:config?

It cuts the name even if using original site name if its a bit too long so when I save images on some sites I keep getting overwrite warnings.

If you use caption or caption+site (sometimes useful in tumblr) it gets a lot worse…

Hello, do you have a donate link?
Also, why did you drop support for WEBMs with sound? I know it worked sometime in the past.

  43. shrunken
    June 14, 2016 at 10:29 pm

It’s recently started showing images at 110% regardless of how low I set the default zoom. I typically set it to 100%, but whether it’s at 90% or lower doesn’t make a difference; I always get 110% unless it maxes out at a lower percentage first. If default is set to something higher such as 170% it works properly.

    FF46.0.1-47.0 & TZP3.9

Also, on first opening TZP preferences, freshly launched FF, I get nothing but the ‘OK’ and ‘Cancel’ buttons in a shrunken window. Everything shows up the next time I open preferences dialog.

    • June 15, 2016 at 9:52 pm

Hmm, I haven’t seen either of those problems happen. What operating system? Does it help to uninstall and reinstall the TZP add-on?

      • shrunken
        June 16, 2016 at 3:59 pm

        Windows 7 Pro SP1
Sorry for the alarm ;), I’ve found the 110% issue only arises on google images, it’s not global.

The issue with the preferences dialog appears to have gone away after upgrading to FF47. I had been experiencing this for weeks. I will update U if I encounter this bug again.

[Request] could you make the hotkey for not showing an image also dismiss the current image pop-up that is showing. It currently only works if I’m holding the key BEFORE hovering a thumbnail. The maximize hotkey already works in the requested behavior so I hope you can make the ‘do not show’ do accordingly.

        Thanks for your time!

  44. June 16, 2016 at 4:54 pm

Thanks for the update. I see what you mean about Google Images; I’ll investigate.

Re the maximize key, a workaround is to press the Esc (escape) key, which cancels the pop-up.

  45. June 16, 2016 at 5:47 pm

I may have figured out the zoom 110% thing: if you’ done View > Zoom > Zoom In, TZP assumes you want that same zooming in your pop-ups. So even if you set default TZP zoom to 100%, if Zoom In caused the web page’s zoom to be 110%, that’s what you’ll see by default in pop-ups.

When viewing the Google Images page, try pressing Control+0 (zero) or do View > Zoom Reset. Then see if your pop-ups default to 100%.

    • shrunken
      June 17, 2016 at 12:29 am

Thanks the escape key works, but is not as convenient as the ‘not display’ hotkey for me. This also affects the ‘display’ hotkey as that uses the same option as well. I hope you can tweak this in a future update, as I almost always decide to ‘display’, ‘not display’ a pop-up after I’m already hovering a thumbnail.

Zoom Reset – This was exactly the cause of my issue. All’s good now David thanks so much!! 🙂

  46. June 17, 2016 at 5:12 pm

I am planning to make the ‘not display’ key pop-down like you suggest. It would only do that in ‘not display’ mode. In ‘display’ mode, I’d be concerned the user might hit that key in preparation for displaying the next image, but not want to pop-down the current image yet.

    • shrunken
      October 20, 2016 at 8:07 am

That ‘not-display’ part makes plenty of sense, as you’ve described it 8-), though I think you misinterpreted the ‘display’ part of my suggestion. I would like that mode to display (aka pop-up at the default zoom level) when already hovering an image, as it doesn’t currently do that.

¿Will a new version be coming soon?

Sorry for the late reply, BTW.

P.S. It would also be great if the mouse didn’t auto-dismiss the displayed pop-up. This currently happens when a large image displays and the cursor is in the way (over the image).

      • shrunken
        October 20, 2016 at 6:22 pm

You may want to ignore the P.S. above; as I have discovered that the fact my OS (Win7) is set to track/activate windows on mouse hover is the root of TZP’s disappearing pop-up images. Windows are only given focus-tracking in my case, without being raised to the front. So I’ll forget about this, unless a convenient workaround exists. 😐

    Dell Studio Laptop 1735
    4gb memory
    windows vista
    dual core
    ATI Radeon HD 3650

when the memory reaches 50% use (cleanmem monitor) it crashes the graphics card

I really apprciate this and use it for downloading images often larger than 2mp via google images,

I use it for fast downloading but as I said it start to flake out after about 15 minutes of use and the display flickers

I assume the texture memory is being filled or handled in a way to cause this

    so I have to restart

thanks for an essential addition to Firefox !

    • December 28, 2016 at 9:58 pm

Hello, Thumbnail Zoom Plus does not itself request use of texture memory; it just asks Firefox to display the image. I don’t know what Firefox does under the hood. But if the graphics card crashes, it sounds like there is another underlying problem, such as broken hardware or a graphics driver bug (perhaps updating the driver might help?).

I found out that recently IMDb changed its image server& i think that server is not supported yet in TZP. Instead TZP is still on the old IMDb server.

Uninstalling it ’cause i find no other use of this addon.

I think I’ve figured this out!

IMDB is working fine for me too. EG on the Star Wars page I’m able to hover the cast thumbs for Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford and see full-size pop-ups.

But here’s the trick: IMDB is now hosting their images on Amazon Web Services, so imdb pop-ups work only if the “Amazon” checkbox is on in Thumbnail Zoom Plus preferences (Site Checkboxes).
