Released Thumbnail Zoom Plus 2.3.2 (bug fix)

January 16, 2013 Leave a comment Go to comments

I’ve released Version 2.3.2, which is a bug fix update to 2.3. I’m awaiting approval from Mozilla for this to become the default version.  In the meantime you can install it from the add-on’s Versions page.

  • Fixes a problem with “Save Enlarged Image As” in Firefox 19 and newer (current default Release version of Firefox).
  • Fixes a problem where pop-up stop appearing in Firefox 20 and newer (current Aurora and Nightly versions of Firefox).
  • Fixes a problem in Firefox 20 and newer (current Aurora and Nightly) which caused the wrong image to appear or the right image with the wrong size.

Other than these fixes, this is the same as version 2.3.

Note: some less serious issues remain in Firefox 20 and newer; I suspect it’s a Firefox bug but continue to investigate.

Hi. Great plugin! It would be interesting to implement a function that zooms all images to a fixed dimension, if the real image size is bigger than the thumbnail. I know Bing image search does this and the previous Google image search engine did it. Thanks.

Hello, I hadn’t thought about it. Do you mean that it would enlarge all the thumbnails on the simultaneously (without requiring the mouse to be over a thumbnail)? Or do you mean it wouldn’t try to show the pop-up as large as possible, but instead would limit to a user-specified maximum size?

Currently pop-up size is limited by the TZP preference “Default Zoom (%)”, but the limit is relative to the image’s max possible size rather than absolute in pixels.

Hi. Not really as big as possible, but an absolute size. For example, if there are two images, let’s say 800×600 and 650×650, TZP should show a hover preview of 300 (or other customized value) pixels width and height max, of course, mantaining the original ratio. The first image should have hover zoom size of 300×256 and the second 300×300.

Thanks again for your interest and dedication in making this great plugin better.

Have a good day and good luck.

That probably wouldn’t be difficult to implement. The only tricky thing is defining the preferences which control it in a non-confusing way. I’d want to keep the current behavior as the default, but potentially give users the option to set Default Zoom (pixels) instead of Default Zoom (%).

Before implementing it, though, I need to decide if a large number of users would find it useful; each new option adds complexity to the preferences and user manual, which may intimidate new users. What’s the scenario where you would find the feature useful?

Version 2.3.2 is now the default version; your Firefox should automatically update from TZP 2.3 in the next day or so.
